- SUSTAINABILITY
San Donato Milanese (Milan), January 19th 2022 – Eni and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have signed a four-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Mexico to identify potential joint project initiatives that will contribute to boost the sustainable development of the local economy through economic diversification, protection of natural and cultural heritage, access to basic services and to respect and promote human rights and inclusion.
Under the MoU, the parties will evaluate specific opportunities of collaboration within several areas of intervention such as the conservation and sustainable management of natural resources. The partners also aim to collaborate in the protection and promotion of culture and traditional knowledge, promoting economic diversification.
“Sustainability plays a central role in Eni’s strategy and goes hand in hand with the development of business opportunities in the countries where the company operates. Mexico is a concrete example of such a model. We are implementing projects that are directly linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the carbon neutrality objectives, strengthening partnerships with international organizations. The MoU signed with UNESCO is a first step in this direction and will contribute to the sustainable development of Mexico”, said Alberto Piatti, Eni´s Head of Sustainable Development.
On behalf of UNESCO, Mr. Frédéric Vacheron, UNESCO Representative in Mexico, said that “for more than 75 years UNESCO has contributed to the conservation, protection and promotion of cultural and natural heritage. As an agency of the United Nations system with a multiple mandate that includes five major fields of action (Education; Natural Sciences; Social and Human Sciences; Culture; and Communication and Information) UNESCO brings an intersectoral and multidisciplinary approach”.
UNESCO is honored to partner with ENI Mexico to pursue its holistic approach that integrates natural and cultural values in the planning and management of sustainable local development in Mexico. Through this alliance in Mexico, Eni and UNESCO will contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals, in particular, Goals 4 for quality education, Goals 13 for climate action and 15 for life on land.
Mexico is a key country in Eni’s future organic growth strategy. The company has been present in the country since 2006 and has established in 2015 its subsidiary Eni Mexico S. de R.L. de C.V. Eni currently holds interests in eight exploration and production blocks (six as an Operator), all located in the Sureste Basin in the Gulf of Mexico.
