e-hyrec® and e-lorec®: remediation of hydrocarbons in groundwater

Autumn forest with waterhole

What are e-hyrec® and e-lorec®?

We have developed two complementary systems for the reclamation of groundwater from hydrocarbons: e-hyrec® is dedicated to recovering the light substances floating on the surface, and e-lorec® to intercept the heavier ones settling on the bottom.

The safeguarding of groundwater is a priority for any industrial activity. Standard treatment, however, is often complex because it requires large volumes of extracted and separated liquid to be processed. Thanks to the integrated filtration systems in e-hyrec® and e-lorec®, we can make the process faster and more efficient by extracting only the polluting phase, thus saving time and energy.

Protecting the water

What are they for?

The two systems e-hyrec® and e-lorec® are capable of cleaning groundwater from the presence of hydrocarbons dispersed by previous industrial activities. The devices are complementary to each other in that the former intercepts the less dense hydrocarbons floating on the surface, while the latter reaches the bottom of the aquifer to recover the denser substances accumulating in the lower layers. The two technologies are produced and used by Eni Rewind, which, besides using them at its own sites, makes them available to third-party customers. e-lorec® won the Eni Innovation Award in the 2022 Eni Awards.

How they work

Both reclamation systems are placed inside wells connected to the groundwater. When it comes to e-hyrec®, the device sits on the surface of the water and, thanks to a hydrophobic filter patented by Eni, that only extracts the contaminant and not the water. The e-lorec® device is placed at the bottom of the well, it is operated by the external unit and starts to recover the contaminant only when the latter is present. The two technologies are fully automated, they do not require constant manning by operators, and make groundwater reclamation faster and more efficient, with a major improvement in the protection and conservation of the water resources.

Features and performance

Thanks to e-hyrec® e-lorec® devices, we have recovered hundreds of thousands of litres of supernatant oil in significantly less time than with traditional technologies. It was not necessary to process the water, which previously accounted for 80-90% of the liquid recovered and disposed of.
