Protecting the area and the air

At our operating sites, we pay special attention protecting the water, reducing emissions and oil spills, and waste management, as well as protecting protected areas that are important for biodiversity and services in the ecosystem. We are committed to enhancing and protecting the local natural heritage, through projects that preserve and rehabilitate ecosystems.

We carry out prevention work and manage all aspects related to oil spill impacts. We also apply the best procedural standards to control major air pollutants and implement environmental remediation practices.

Sky, land, sea: our actions for protecting the environment

Committed to reducing emissions

We use the Best Available Techniques (BATs) and the highest procedural standards to reduce emissions and assess the main pollutants in the atmosphere. Compared to 2022, air pollutant emissions whilst carrying out

our work or across the value chain were unchanged. We are also historically committed to reducing our direct GHG emissions, and were among the first in the industry to set a series of targets that improve our performance across various assets with specific indicators that signal progress.

"Oil Spill" risk management activities

We carry out activities to prevent, prepare for and, where necessary, respond to the risk of accidental oil spills, both onshore and offshore, including the possible mitigation of the effects and restoration of the original environmental conditions. Here are some of our key activities: In Italy, in the area of prevention, we carry out annual maintenance of the potential pipeline spill detection system (through the e-vpms® system) and the maintenance of the weather monitoring and warning system. In the upstream sector, we inspect, monitor and replace onshore and offshore pipelines to ensure asset integrity and prevent spills.

We also work with industry associations such as IPIECA, the global oil and gas association dedicated to advancing environmental and social performance across the energy transition, and the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP) to strengthen the capacity to respond to marine pollution caused by spills (of oil or other chemicals). Finally, we update and disseminate best practice guidelines, participate in regional initiatives in cooperation with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Global Initiative for West, Central and Southern Africa, and monitor the activities of the Oil Spill Preparedness Regional Initiative for the Caspian and Black Seas.

Environmental remediation practices

Protecting the territories in which we operate is an absolute priority for Eni, in line with our corporate mission’s objective to preserve our planet. Over the years, we have developed increasingly effective and sustainable environmental remediation techniques and practices to utilise land, water and waste, whether it be industrial or from remediation. The Eni company that oversees this area is Eni Rewind, which, among other things, in cooperation with its stakeholders and thanks to a network of partnerships with research institutions and universities supports innovation through the testing and the implementation of new remediation technologies.

These are some of the main activities:

  • pre-operation reclamation solutions and the regeneration of treated water
  • reconversion of disused assets into renewable energy plants and land reclamation platforms
  • utilisation of urban sludge through the project in Porto Marghera.

Our commitment to the transition

We specifically support a socially just energy transition, aiming to preserve the environment and biodiversity and promote access to energy resources in an efficient and sustainable manner for everyone.
