The initiatives seek to improve the quality of life of vulnerable populations while fostering long-term stability in the region, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Pemba (Mozambique), 29 January 2025 - Eni Rovuma Basin, on behalf of the Area 4 partners and in collaboration with Universidade Lúrio and the NGOs ADPP and AVSI, is supporting the socio-economic development of communities in the districts of Pemba, Metuge and Mecufi in Cabo Delgado Province.
These areas, already impacted by the ongoing volatile context, have seen their situation further exacerbated by the recent devastation caused by Cyclone Chido.
As part of the “Pro Resilience and Recovery Cabo Delgado Projects,” implemented under the Coral South Plan of Development, 5 new water wells have been successfully delivered, of which, 3 wells were handed over to Mecufi District and 2 to Metuge District. This intervention comes at a crucial time, as cyclone Chido recently struck the northern region, causing damages to water supply systems. The delivery of these wells is helping to restore the access to drinking water and sanitation to communities to approximately 2,300 residents.
In addition, the Social Cohesion Project, implemented in partnership with AVSI Foundation, has being equipping the communities with essential skills and tools to establish sustainable livelihoods.
In Metuge District, 75 young women completed a three-month entrepreneurship training. Of these, 66 have received funding and start-up kits to launch their income-generating activities. These activities include setting up stalls for selling frozen products, groceries, clothing, footwear, while the kits provide tools such as rakes, hoes, wheelbarrows, and fertilizers.
The implementation of these initiatives is part of the long-lasting strategy of Eni Rovuma Basin aimed at promoting social cohesion and inclusive development of both internally displaced people (IDPs) and communities in Cabo Delgado Province, while fostering long-term stability in the region, in line with the United Nations SDGs.
