Maputo (Mozambique), 29 February 2024 - The Managing Director of Eni Rovuma Basin, Marica Calabrese - on behalf of its Area 4 Partners ExxonMobil, China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), Kogas, Galp and Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos (ENH) - signed with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Land and Environment of Mozambique Emilia Fumo, a Cooperation Agreement to support institutional capacity-building and improve research and innovation capabilities at national level.
Under the agreement, ERB and the Ministry will cooperate, also with the involvement of academic institutions and research bodies, to promote training activities in the environmental area, with a view to training trainees in the preparation and analysis of scientific studies that impact the sustainable management of resources. These activities will be carried out to benefit the technical staff of the National Environmental Quality Agency, generating a positive impact at country level.
Also, the agreement provides for initiatives to improve and enhance the operating capacity of environmental laboratory facilities, also through the provision and installation of equipment, furniture, and computers.
Marica Calabrese, Managing Director of ERB, commented that “Sharing knowledge with the countries where we operate is one of Eni’s trademarks. With this agreement we endeavor to contribute to strengthen the ability of Mozambique’s institutions in safeguarding the environment and managing its resources”.
The initiative is implemented by ERB on behalf of its Area 4 Partners and will be carried out as part of Coral South project sustainability plan.
About Eni
Eni has been present in Mozambique since 2006. Between 2011 and 2014, it discovered vast natural gas resources in the Rovuma basin, in the Coral, Mamba Complex, and Agulha reservoirs, with around 2,400 billion cubic meters of gas in place. Eni is the delegated operator of the Coral South, project, which was the first Project to produce LNG in Mozambique's Rovuma Basin. Since production startup in 2022, Coral South has produced approximately 240,000 MMSCF of gas and delivered 47 cargoes of LNG.
About Area 4
Area 4 is operated by Mozambique Rovuma Venture S.p.A. (MRV), a joint venture owned by Eni, ExxonMobil and China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), which has a 70% share in the Area 4 Concession and Production Contract. In addition to MRV, the other partners include Galp, KOGAS and ENH, each with a 10% participation interest.
