Communities

Contribute to developing economic and social opportunities for the communities in which we operate, with a view to long-term collaboration.

Eni’s commitments

  • Promote local development projects with a long-term perspective to improve the living standards of host communities, including vulnerable groups.
  • Contribute to developing adequate economic and social opportunities for all.
  • Promote access to energy, economic diversification, education, community health, access to water and sanitation, land protection and improved social protection systems.

In the Countries where it operates, Eni promotes local development projects with a long-term perspective to improve the living standards of host communities including vulnerable groups.

Eni’s approach aims at contributing to develop appropriate economic and social opportunities for all, by promoting access to energy, economic diversification, education, community health, access to water and sanitation, land protection and the improvement of the social protection systems. This implies the provision of transparent information and the implementation of strategies for the engagement of local communities by promoting free, prior and informed consultations, especially engaging vulnerable groups, with the purpose of considering their legitimate expectations in conceiving and conducting business activities, including community investments.

Local Development Programmes

The Local Development Programmes provide an integrated view of the various activities that Eni carries out in the Countries in which it operates, also developed through the engagement of relevant stakeholders. The activities, defined in accordance with the National Development Plans and based on public-private partnerships, contribute to the achievement of the Country’s objectives relating to the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement (Nationally Determined Contributions NDCs), to improve the well-being of local communities.

As part of the Local Development Programmes, Eni carries out projects along some lines of intervention, including:

1. Access to off-grid energy and clean cooking technologies.

2. Economic diversification (e.g., agricultural projects, support for entrepreneurship, microcredit, infrastructure interventions).

3. Education and professional training programmes.

These interventions are developed with a long-term perspective and are implemented based on the assessment of the local context.

Examples of programmes

Access to energy

Access to energy is a necessary prerequisite for the satisfaction of basic needs related to health, education, economic diversification and to support local businesses and creates new job opportunities. Eni contributes to this challenge through the creation of gas infrastructure as an integral part of the business model - in 2022, Eni supplied 77% of the gas produced from its fields to local markets - the development of initiatives that promote access to improved cooking systems and the implementation of off-grid projects powered by renewable sources.

With the construction of thermoelectric power plants in sub-Saharan Africa, Eni has contributed to improve access to electricity thanks to the increase of the capacity installed and the valorization of the associated gas to diversify the energy mix and increase the quality of the network and the affordability of electricity supply.

Through local development projects, Eni also promotes access to modern cooking solutions for vulnerable households through the replacement of traditional cookstoves with improved models that help reduce household pollution, limiting people’s health problems and reducing CO2 emissions. Furthermore, it supports entrepreneurship at local level, contributing to business start-ups and creating new jobs. In 2022, the production and distribution of 25,643 improved cookstoves in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Mozambique was achieved, benefiting about 128,000 people.
