A canyon at the bottom of the sea

This is the story of the exploration that yielded one of the most extraordinary gas resources in the deep waters of East Africa. In 2006, Mozambique put out to tender a series of blocks for the exploration of the waters of the Rovuma Basin, on the border between Tanzania and Mozambique.

There was very little geophysical data available for the first licensing round. However, it managed to build a geological model on the available data and decided to submit an offer for two blocks, obtaining an operating license for Block Four, which was then named Area 4, which is what this story is about.

The discoveries in Mozambique are among the largest gas discoveries ever made by Eni in its more than 60 years of global exploration history; they will play a key role in both Eni's and Mozambique's future
