Our path to achieve carbon neutrality

Towards the Net Zero goal

To combat climate change everyone must play their part: as a global energy tech company, we have made a commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. By that date, all our products, services and solutions will be fully decarbonized throughout their entire life cycle (Scope 1, 2, 3).

This strategy is implemented through an industrial transformation plan involving the entire company. The main elements are the progressive decarbonization of the upstream portfolio, growth in renewables and a focus on the circular economy, in particular through increased capacity in bioenergy. CO₂ capture, storage and utilisation (CCUS) projects have a complementary function, reducing only the residual emissions that are hard to abate with current technologies. Our frame of reference is the Paris Agreement, with the shared goal of keeping global warming within 1.5°C.

The energy transition requires a technological transformation

Innovation is the tool we have chosen to tackle the energy transition. It is a constant element in our history and the most effective response to the challenges facing the energy world. Based on the principle of technology neutrality, we aim to have a diverse mix of technologies available on a case-by-case basis according to their maturity and effectiveness in reducing emissions. By bringing together the laboratories of our Research Centres, the HPC5 supercomputing infrastructure and the skills of our people, we develop proprietary transition technologies that, when applied on an industrial scale, allow us to increase efficiency, create new businesses and support the decarbonization process At the same time, we conduct scientific research on strategic topics, working over the long term to achieve revolutionary changes, such as those that will be made possible by magnetic confinement nuclear fusion. From new ideas and knowledge developed in cooperation with important scientific and industrial partners, we aim to generate the energy of tomorrow.

We are a global energy company

Eni operates along the entire value chain: from the exploration, development and extraction of natural gas and oil, to the generation of electricity from cogeneration and renewable sources, including both traditional and bio refining and chemistry, and the development of circular economy processes. Our activities extend to end markets, where we market gas, electricity and products to both retail and business customers and local markets. We are also pursuing initiatives to capture, transport, store and use CO₂ and Carbon Offset Solutions to absorb residual emissions.
