Activities

In just over three years, the Salissa Mwana project has reached important results in terms of strengthening the Country’s healthcare system, including its vaccination program. In 2010, from an organizational point of view, the project reached its full development by strengthening and extending primary healthcare services to all the districts of the three regions involved in the project.

As for the rehabilitation of the Health Centers, the last 8 Centers of the 30 facilities planned for the project were restructured and equipped by the end of 2010 (1 in Kouilou, 4 in Niari, and 3 in Cuvette).

Clinical activities (epidemiological screening of the children population and vaccination missions), awareness building campaigns and training initiatives have continued according to the project’s operative plans and have produced significant results.

  • AWARENESS BUILDING

At the end of 2010, support had been provided to the Ministry of Health’s vaccination activities by conducting 2.000 vaccination campaigns (1.210 in 2010 alone). Thanks to these campaigns, 967 villages were reached, covering 1.116 of the villages involved in the project up to 2010 and representing 83% of the villages located in the three regions, and 176,000 doses of vaccine (94,000 in 2010) were administered to cover all the main antigens.
Furthermore, in 2010, Eni Foundation provided support, with personnel and equipment, to the national campaigns promoted by Ministry of Health to contrast a severe polio epidemic in the country.

In 2010, the continuing professional training program for the medical and paramedical staff working in the healthcare facilities was further implemented. These activities progressively involved personnel from the more remote Health Centers. At the end of the year, 333 training sessions and 348 supervision and on-the-job-training sessions had been conducted, resulting in the training of 287 people (149 in 2010), which included healthcare agents, obstetricians, midwives, laboratory technicians and agents in charge of raising awareness.

Information education and communication (IEC) activities for the population on the prevention of transmittable childhood diseases and on the importance of vaccines are conducted by Fondation Congo Assistance. At the end of 2010, 843 villages had been reached through 293 IEC sessions directed at the beneficiary communities
