Eni Foundation

The University of "La Sapienza" in Rome is the scientific partner in the Salissa Mwana project

Following a collaboration agreement signed with Eni Foundation, the Department  of Pediatrics of the University of  “La Sapienza” in Rome has been providing, since October 2008, the technical and scientific support to the project, also by appointing a scientific expert and guaranteeing the constant presence of two doctors in Congo. The Department, in particular, is responsible for training the local healthcare personnel, conducting epidemiological screening of the infant population, as well as for supervising activities and promoting awareness initiatives among the population about the prevention of transmittable diseases.
The two doctors, under the supervision of the scientific expert, are responsible for:

  • training the local doctors and nurses through continuous refresher courses and regular institutional training meetings in Italy and in Congo, which involve sessions covering theoretical aspects on a number of subjects (maternal-infant healthcare, neo-natal nutrition, emerging pathologies and infectious diseases in Congo), as well as practical clinical applications;
  • conducting scientific and epidemiological studies concerning the endemic areas of the country, by paying particular attention to the presence, type and prophylaxis of infectious and parasitical diseases and to their incidence and prevalence in the areas of intervention;
  • compiling statistics on the differences in therapies and on survival rates in the rehabilitated healthcare facilities, as well as preparing a reporting and control plan every three months on the activities carried out;
  • setting up a document center with up-to-date texts and publications on the most common subjects and problems encountered in the areas covered by the project.
