Eni Foundation supports mother and child health in Ghana

On 21 December Eni Foundation signed a protocol of intent with the Ministry of Health in Ghana for a project for the development and reinforcement of healthcare services in the Western Region of the country in an effort to reduce mother and infant mortality rates.
The area affected by the project consists of the coastal districts of Jomoro and Ellembele which are home to some 250,000 people, mainly in rural and isolated areas, and over 80,000 of whom are children aged between 0 and 10, and around 70,000 fertile women.
Activities foreseen by the project include:

  • extension of basic healthcare services to area that are less well served;

  • improvements to mother and infant medical, obstetrics and neonatology services to an intermediate level (community clinics and health centres);

  • reinforcement of transport services for urgent needs and obstetrics and neonatology emergencies  to district hospital level; and

  • strengthening of planning, monitoring and evaluation skills and training of health personnel, at both regional and district levels.
