Eni Foundation – Project for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in Congo

On January 22nd Eni Foundation signed an agreement with the Ministry of Health and the National Council for the Fight against AIDS of the Republic of Congo for the implementation of a 4-year project for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV.

The project, named “Kento Mwana” (Mother Child), is aimed at reducing to 2% the transmission of HIV in the targeted maternal-infant population and will rely on the logistics and the network of health facilities already activated or scheduled by the Foundation in the Kouilou, Niari and Cuvette regions as part of the “Salissa Mwana” project. The Clinic for Infectious and Tropical Diseases of the University of Genoa will be in charge of the project’s clinical and scientific aspects.

Special care will be given to improving the screening, diagnostic and prevention activities that will be conducted by the selected health facilities, as well as to strengthening the skills of local medical  personnel and of biology and lab technicians, through training courses both locally and in Italy, with the aim of gradually transferring competences.
