In order to improve the effectiveness of the companies engaged in the Global Compact and to facilitate the respect of the 10 Principles, local networks have been established with the aim of promoting the GC at a local level: these Networks, currently present in more than 80 countries, operate as a platform for information, providing support and coordination to companies and organisations participating in the Global Compact and promoting the initiative, ensuring a constant dialogue between all participants along the lines of multi-stakeholder engagement.
The Global Network Italian (GCNI), established in 2002 and initially coordinated by the ILO, since 2006 has been coordinated by the FONDACA (Fondazione per la Cittadinanza Attiva).
All of the organizations that participate in the GC also have the right to participate in the Networks. To date, there are 17 Italian participants in the Global Compact, 110 of which are companies. Some organisations provide annual support for the Network in the form of financial or technical resources. Such organisations are given the status of sustaining participants.
Of these, there are 8 companies, including Eni, supporting the Network (the others are: Unicredit, Adecco, Autostrade, Coca Cola, HBC Italia, Edison, IntesaSanPaolo).
Thanks also to consultation activities and constant dialogue with FONDACA, Eni has conducted an analysis of corporate compliance with the principles of the GC on the basis of “action taken-outcomes measurability -future commitments” agreed with both internal and external stakeholders.
On 8 October 2009 Eni hosted at its corporate headquarters in Rome, the Annual Meeting of the Italian Network. In addition to the Network sustainers, a number of other important Italian companies - which, while demonstrating an interest in the initiative have still not officially signed up - took part. The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also participated and Eni, in cooperation with the Italian Network, is consolidating a consultation process in view of the Global Compact Leaders Summit to be held in New York in June 2010.
