As a member of the Global Compact since 2001, Eni is committed to contributing to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals through concrete actions.
The United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs, also known ad Millenium Goals) consist in eight objectives that UN Member States committed to achieve by 2015, following the signing of the Millenium Declaration in September 2000. Businesses play a leading role in the pursuit of the Millenium Goals.
| Goal | Topic | Eni’s commitment |
| Goal 1 | Eliminating extreme poverty and hunger | actions to transfer technological know-how in order to give to African countries the tools they need to create the structures for a functioning and autonomous energy system, which, in turn, will stimulate the socio-economic development of the territories. Such actions are pursued also in close cooperation with the United Nations, the World Health Organisation and the ILO. |
| Goal 2 | Guarantee universal primary education |
Eni is committed to the protection and promotion of children's rights based on the specific conventions of the ILO. These are also the values that underpin Eni's Guidelines for the protection and promotion of human rights (2007) and its Code of Ethics (2008). Projects such as eniscuola and Schoolnet, as well as cooperation with schools and universities in Italy and abroad, aim to spread information useful for the development of knowledge in the young and the promotion of the fundamental rights of children. |
| Goal 3 | Promote sexual equality and independence for women. | Commitment supported by the company's Code of Ethics. Eni is also committed to offering equal opportunities to everyone in the company and to offer personal development and gender development opportunities by promoting initiatives that support local economic systems. |
| Goal 4 | Reduction of infant mortality | Eni, through Eni Foundation, supports the promotion of children's health in the less developed areas where it operates with awareness campaigns, the reinforcement of local health facilities and the training of local healthcare workers. |
| Goal 5 | Improve maternal health | With the implementation of women's health monitoring programmes in the countries where it operates, the promotion of new forms of entrepreneurial development and flexible working for women, Eni is committed to making a contribution also in this sphere. And not only with monitoring programmes and the care of women and children, but also with the construction of new facilities and the creation of a network of healthcare centres for local populations. |
| Goal 6 | Fight against HIV/AIDS, malaria and other endemic diseases | In this area Eni invests in facilities for the elimination of the risks to health and the company also supports health campaigns around the world. Also for these projects Eni operates through the Eni Foundation. |
| Goal 7 | Guarantee environmental sustainability |
Eni's approach includes the evaluation of the environmental impact on the territory (ESIA), ISO 14001 certification which guarantees the quality of operations, special attention to the management of water resources, and the continuous search for improvements in the production and distribution of energy. |
| Goal 8 | Develop global partnerships for development |
Eni's model of cooperation and development is based on strategic agreements with the national and regional governments of the countries where it operates, also often with the involvement of civil society and other international and local stakeholders. |
