Eni identifies and evaluates the environmental, social, economic and cultural impacts of its activities, including on indigenous populations, guaranteeing mitigation and putting in place processes for improvements.
Since 2008 the HSE management system has been integrated with a standard Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), which is applied to all new projects making it possible to have a more accurate socio-economic and cultural picture in the analysis of impacts. Eni is also adopting a new ESHIA standard that includes, for each project, an integrated and joint evaluation of environmental, social and health impacts.
Eni consequently systematically carries out impact evaluations and studies for all exploration and development projects, in full compliance with national legislation. When such projects have been defined, and the operational phase confirmed, full documentation is submitted to the competent local authorities for approval and can therefore be consulted as necessary during the local procedures.
Eni also takes advantage of the collaboration of partners of excellence from the worlds of university research, top-level consultancy and non-governmental associations, both at an international level and in Italy.
At the end of 2009, Eni began to collaborate with the
International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF)
with the aim of evaluating the opportunity of integrating into its operational procedures valuation criteria for impacts directly related to human rights.
