On the 28th of January 2011, on the occasion of the annual World Economic Forum in Davos the Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon and the Global Compact Executive Director Georg Kell officially launched the LEAD program.
The initiative is restricted to the companies in the world considered by Global Compact able to play a leading role at an international level on account of their commitment to sustainable development, not only respecting the ten Global Compact principles, but also by actively promoting the UN Millennium Development Goals.
As a result of its ongoing and active commitment to the Global Compact and taking into consideration the role played in supporting the Global Compact Leaders Summit held in June 2010, Eni was invited in November 2010 to join the LEAD Platform.
In his speech during the launch event, Eni's Chief Executive Paolo Scaroni underlined the centrality of access to energy and the fight against electricity poverty as essential prerequisites for the attainment of the UN Millennium Development Goals. As concrete examples, Paolo Scaroni spoke about Eni's projects for electricity production from gas flaring already ongoing in Nigeria and Congo, and to be implemented in the future also in other African countries where the company operates.
Through its Energy for Development model, Eni contributes its commitment and experience to the LEAD platform in a "collective action" to fight energy poverty in developing countries
