The MTBE - acronym for methyl-ter-butyl-ether - is the initiator and yet the main clean fuel. Its usage begun more than thirty years ago for replacing lead into gasoline, however the product is still popular and largely used in the formulation of sophisticated modern gasoline, like that in use into the European Union, thanks to its high octane number and to the absence in its composition of any kind of olefins, aromatics, sulphur and metals.
MTBE's world consumption in 2008 is being estimated in 16.5 million ton.
