Building of highway pavement with Agip Eliflex technology

Eliflex

An effective response to the wide-ranging needs of operators in the sector

Mechanical resistance, duration and safety, both in terms of functionality and environmental protection over the life cycle, are among the most significant requirements in road surfacing. Road surfaces that meet these needs depend on the selection of raw materials used in the bituminous mixture and a valid contribution is made by bitumen itself, and especially by modified bitumen

The improved mechanical characteristics of layers of asphalt made with modified bitumen make it possible to provide improved surface resistance and a longer life in relation to the thickness of the layers. Porous surfaces also increase traffic safety, thanks to improved road holding, a reduction of spray from wet roads and a marked reduction in noise caused rolling friction.

Research and experience have shown that the use of ELIFLEX modified bitumen allows for the preparation of high-performance asphalts that meet the demand for durability, stability, improved performance at both very low and very high temperatures, structural suitability with regard to the increase in heavy traffic, the optimisation of maintenance requirements, safety and a reduced environmental impact.

Eni’s Eliflex modified bitumens

ELIFLEX binders are modified bitumens that use suitable polymers for the production of high-performance, durable road surfaces with improved resistance and behaviour at both very low and very high temperatures, under all conditions. Eni’s modification technology is based on an original patented procedure that uses carefully selected bituminous bases and an elastomeric modifying agent such as styrene butadiene styrene (SBS). The formulations identified allow for the creation of products with superior characteristics that offer an optimal response to the technological requirements of modern road surfacing.
ELIFLEX bitumens are available in six different grades: SF, MEDIUM, HD, HE, HES, AM.

Characteristics and performance

Compared with traditional road-surfacing bitumens, ELIFLEX bitumens offer:

  • reduced thermal sensitivity, a high softening point and low breaking point (Fraass), which guarantees an extensive phase of plasticity;
  • high resistance to wear and aging;
  • excellent elasticity and resistance to deformities, also at high temperatures;
  • improved behaviour at low temperatures.

In particular the addition of the polymer SBS heightens cohesion and strength, increasing the composite adhesion. The excellent levels of viscosity at the temperatures used in mixing and laying ensure easy workability, using traditional machinery and plant under a wide range of operating conditions.

Uses

The characteristics of ELIFLEX modified bitumens make it possible to realise road surfaces that are resistant over time to the effects of heavy traffic and, in the case of porous asphalt and anti-slip surfaces that increase breaking efficiency (SMA - splittmastix asphalt), levels of safety on wet surfaces that is markedly superior to any other surface made with traditional bitumens.
The noise-reduction and draining qualities of "open" composites made with ELIFLEX bitumens also contribute to a reduction in noise pollution caused by tyres (rolling friction) and ensure vertical and horizontal water draining, eliminating surface residue with the consequent risks from hydroplaning and poor visibility (cloud effect).
A range of grades have been developed in response to the experience of leading contractors and road and motorway maintenance bodies.
ELIFLEX SF, MEDIUM and HD bitumens are recommended for the preparation of asphalts for wear layers, links and bases when there is a need for high levels of resistance to deformation at high temperatures and an improved durability compared with unmodified bitumens or those that simply use additives.
The characteristics of ELIFLEX HD, HE and HES bitumens are particularly suitable for high-resistance draining and noise-reduction surfaces for roads, motorways and airport runways, or for works (bridges and tunnels) of particular significance, in all climatic conditions.
ELIFLEX AM is recommended for particularly complex surfacing needs with special resistance to wear and durability. ELIFLEX bitumens can also be hot-sprayed for  the addition of a water-resistant layer (S.A.M.I) underlying the porous surface.
