Eni has adopted the highest standards of safety and protection for its people, its plant and the territories in which it operates. Indeed, one of Eni's points of strength is the attention that it always focuses on plant safety, the training of personnel and the approach adopted in the management of the overall business.
The main aim of the activities undertaken in the four-year period 2009-2012 remains the reduction in the frequency and severity of accidents and the prevention and mitigation of process associated risks. To this end, action has been taken in three areas:
The accident frequency index in 2010 shows that, compared with the previous year and even more compared with 2008, there was an improvement both for company employees and contract staff. In particular the frequency index was down by 9% for Eni personnel and down by 25.4% for contract staff.
Unfortunately 2010 also two fatal accidents involvinf Saipem workers and eight among Eni contract staff (three in the Exploration & Production sector, four at Saipem and one in the Refining & Marketing sector). On 5 November 2010 an air accident in Pakistan led to the deaths of 21 Eni people and crew members.
