Eni has in place a series of integrated measures for the reduction of oil spills from the production, loading and transport of petroleum products. Transport technologies are subjected to frequent inspections, maintenance and checks for pipelines and vehicles and the use of sealed systems for loading and storage.
Eni participates in the work of the Coastal Oil Spill Improvement Programme (COSPIP), for the development of strategies and the setting up the equipment needed in case of oil spill emergencies in the Barents Sea, in the Global Initiative IMO/IPIECA (called OSPRI) concerning the Caspian Sea region and in the Global Initiative IMO/IPIECA WACWF (West and Central Africa), a project involving the local governments for the development of emergency plans and mutual-aid agreements in the event of an oil spill.
In 2010, there was a slight increase in the number of oil spills caused by accidents and corrosion (excluding sabotage), whereas there was a significant fall in the quantity spilled (down 39%).
Performance figures – overall and by sector – are available in the Sustainability Performance while more detailed information can be found on the dedicated page.
