For Eni renewable energy sources are an important investment opportunity for the future, with significant implications also in the present. On the one hand, Eni integrate renewables in its production processes with a view to reducing the accumulation of its emissions of GHGs. On the other, in dedicates a significant proportion of its investments in technological development to the study of technologies that will enable a more effective use of renewable resources. In 2007 Eni launched a wide-ranging research programme for the development of technologies in the field of renewables.
In fact, the renewable source on which the company is investing most is solar, which is already used to reduce emissions: from the supply of off-shore platforms and electricity generation for telecommunications plant, buildings and distribution systems. In the four-year period 2011-2014, with investments of €106.5 million, solar alone accounted for over 50% of research investments in non-core activities, of which a large part was destined to the partnerships that Eni has with MIT. This agreement has already produced evident results and led to the registration of highly promising patents, including those for ultra-flexible solar cells and solar cells printed on paper.
