Marine lubricants, if dispersed in the sea, cause serious damage: a single liter of oil is enough to cover a thousand square meters of sea in a thin film of oil. This film prevents the sun's rays from passing through and photosynthesizing marine flora because it is impermeable to oxygen. This leads to an asphyxiation of the underlying water making it unlivable for the fauna that inhabits it.
