Natural gas is a mix of chemical substances, called hydrocarbons, that are generally found in a gaseous state. Natural gas is found in the subsoil and is almost always associated with oil. It mostly comprises methane but also includes small quantities of ethane, propane, butane and pentane, etc. This is why natural gas is often simply referred to as ‘methane'.
More information about natural gas: history, reserves, uses etc. can be found in the Natural Gas section of the What is Energy chapter.
